Beware of bogus colleges

It’s that time of year when thousands of matriculants scramble for limited spaces at universities. With many rejected, students can fall prey to unaccredited institutions. SA Qualifications Authority COO Dr Makhapa Makhafola and Boston Media House counsellor Claire Jackson-Bernardo warn: “Check if a college is registered and accredited before registering.”

According to Newzroom Africa, dozens of bogus colleges operate in South Africa. They promise qualifications that are not recognized while collecting large fees. Dr Makhafola advises students to verify an institution’s credentials on the SAQA website before applying or paying fees. Additionally, counsellor Jackson-Bernardo says to be wary of colleges soliciting students outside examination centres. Legitimate colleges will not do this. With many students desperate after exam results, bogus operators take advantage of the vulnerability. Officials emphasize thoroughly researching colleges, not rushing decisions, and consulting guidance counsellors when in doubt. Avoiding scam colleges will protect one’s time, money and future prospects.
