South Africa’s 2024 national and provincial elections promise to usher in a new political era. With multiple parties declining in support, established allegiances shifting, and record numbers of young voters enrolled, these elections could reshape the country’s political landscape.
“We are seeing changes in voter behaviour that point to more fluidity at the ballot box,” says Sy Mamabolo, Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) spokesperson. “South Africans are increasingly voting based on issues rather than historical loyalties.”
The IEC’s biggest logistical challenge will be enabling South Africa’s ‘Born Free’ generation, who came of age after apartheid, to exercise their democratic right. “We’ve made voter registration easier for young people through online platforms and campus drives,” says Mamabolo. “They could be the difference makers.”
With rampant joblessness fuelling discontent, parties ignoring young voters do so at their peril. The EFF and DA are positioning themselves as youth-centric alternatives while the ANC’s dominance hangs in the balance. Whoever inspires hope in young South Africans may capture the political middle ground.
The 2024 ballot box offers the promise of change. For young voters, it’s a chance to shape their future and usher in leaders focused on creating jobs and fighting corruption. These elections are truly momentous.
