Woman’s Body Found Near Road in Kwaggafontein: A Grim Reminder of Gender-Based Violence

The tragic discovery of an unidentified woman’s body near the R573 Road in the Kwaggafontein area early on 27 August 2024 has sent shockwaves through the community. The incident has been described by the Acting Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service (SAPS) in Mpumalanga, Major General (Dr) Zeph Mkhwanazi, as a significant setback in the ongoing fight against Gender-Based Violence and Femicide.

The body was discovered early in the morning, and the circumstances surrounding this murder are still under investigation. No arrests have been made yet, and the investigation is ongoing. Initial findings suggest that some parts of the woman’s body may have been removed, although this will need to be confirmed through a postmortem examination.

The police are urging anyone with information that could assist in apprehending the perpetrators to come forward. Members of the public can contact the Crime Stop number at 08600 10111 or provide information through the MYSAPSAPP. All information received will be treated confidentially, and callers may remain anonymous. Investigators are also appealing to families who have recently lost a female relative in her twenties to contact the police immediately.

Major General Mkhwanazi has strongly condemned the incident, particularly because it occurred during Women’s Month, a time meant to celebrate and uplift women. “This is a disturbing incident where the life of a female person has been cut short by heartless individuals. It takes us back from our efforts to fight this scourge that has plagued our society for too long. It is imperative that we work together to break the cycle of violence and ensure that perpetrators are brought to justice. From our side as police, we promise to work hard and apprehend those responsible for this heinous crime,” said the General.

This incident underscores the persistent issue of violence against women in South Africa, despite ongoing efforts to address and combat Gender-Based Violence. The community and law enforcement must continue to work together to bring justice to the victims and to make strides in ending this devastating pattern of violence.
