The police in Tonga, Mpumalanga, are actively working to trace a suspect involved in the rape of two learners on their way to school in Mzinti on 2 September. The victims, aged 16 and 17, were reportedly attacked at gunpoint and assaulted in nearby bushes before being threatened not to report the crime.

Police spokesperson Colonel Donald Mdhluli confirmed that the incident was promptly reported to the school, leading to the opening of two counts of rape. The Family Violence, Child Protection, and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit is handling the investigation.

Authorities have urged students to stay vigilant, particularly in secluded areas, and encouraged parents to support their children’s safety. The public is requested to report any suspicious activity or information that could lead to the suspect’s capture through the Crime Stop hotline or MYSAPSAPP, with the assurance of confidentiality.

Acting Provincial Commissioner Major General Zeph Mkhwanazi expressed the police’s commitment to swiftly apprehending the suspect, emphasizing that collaboration with community structures is key to preventing further attacks. He reassured the public that efforts are being intensified to ensure learners feel safe attending school.
