It’s 100 for kokwani Nwa Sbhensisi!

Bushbuckridge residents gathered in high spirits this past weekend to celebrate the 100th birthday of community matriarch, Nwa Sbhensisi, whose remarkable milestone was honoured at her home. The event was organised by the African National Congress (ANC) Kaizer Mgiba Branch) under the leadership of Ward Councillor Sabelo Mkhabela, who worked tirelessly to ensure the day was a success.

The celebration was marked by heartfelt speeches, music, and the joy of seeing a beloved elder reach her centenary. Councillor Mkhabela said the event was about giving honour where it is due. “This is not just a birthday; it is a celebration of wisdom, resilience, and community spirit. We felt it was important for the ANC to recognise Kokwana as a living pillar of our community,” he remarked.

In preparation for the event, the ANC branch reached out to the business community for support, and local businesses responded generously. Vuako Fast Food, Blinkwater, and Makungu Security, under the leadership of Director Mandla Matsane, ensured that the centenarian received a special gift — a brand-new bed complete with bedcovers.

Matsane expressed his pride in giving back to his community. “I am delighted to be part of developing Alexandria and to plough back as a son of the soil. It is not only about supporting this programme — whenever the community needs me, I always step in. I even donated land for the new clinic that will be built soon,” he said.

Further contributions came from Hlompco Investment, Matlarona Security Company under Director Dan Matsane, Moshe Thobela, and Princess Ndlovu from Lwakhanyi Trading, who all played a vital role in making the day a success.

The gesture symbolised the deep respect held for elders within the community, as well as the spirit of ubuntu — working together for the good of others.

The Mkhonto family, relatives of Nwa Sbhensisi, were visibly moved by the support. Family member Eddie Mkhonto warmly welcomed guests, saying: “We are grateful to the ANC branch for honouring Kokwana. As a family, we were not in a good position to celebrate her centenary on our own. This gesture showed love and dignity, and we truly appreciate it.”

For Nwa Sbhensisi herself, the day was filled with gratitude and joy. She expressed her thanks to everyone who made the celebration possible, smiling warmly as she received her gifts and the well-wishes of neighbours and friends.

The ANC Kaizer Mgiba Branch, through Councillor Mkhabela, extended its appreciation to all the donors and community members who supported the occasion. They pledged to continue honouring elders who contribute to the fabric of Bushbuckridge society.

As the sun set on a day of laughter, song, and reflection, residents left with a renewed sense of unity and the reminder that honouring elders is at the heart of African tradition.
