Mpumalanga’s Thulani Sibiya crowned National Best Teacher

The Mpumalanga Department of Education has congratulated Mr Thulani Sibiya, Deputy Principal of Sophungane Combined School in Nkomazi Local Municipality, for being named the overall winner of the 2025 National Teaching Awards in the prestigious National Best Teacher category.

Mr Sibiya, who teaches Science and Mathematics to Grade 12 learners, has earned widespread recognition for his commitment to academic excellence. With seven years of classroom experience, he has consistently inspired learners to pursue ambitious career paths, particularly in the fields of medicine, engineering, and aviation.

Speaking about his philosophy, Mr Sibiya said he is driven by a belief that one’s background does not define destiny, but attitude does. It is this outlook, he explained, that motivates him to push learners to believe in themselves and aim for careers that will not only transform their own lives but also contribute to the growth of South Africa’s economy.

The Department of Education praised his achievement, describing him as a shining star whose work demonstrates the transformative power of dedicated teaching. His recognition comes at a time when Mpumalanga continues to celebrate educators who persevere in challenging circumstances to produce results.

Premier Mandla Ndlovu and the MEC for Education are expected to extend formal congratulations, noting that Sibiya’s victory places Mpumalanga firmly on the national stage of teaching excellence.

“Well done, Mr Sibiya. You are our shining star. Congratulations on this achievement and good luck with the national edition,” the Department said in a statement.

Mr Sibiya’s recognition is not only a personal triumph but also a source of inspiration for learners and fellow educators across the province. His win highlights the importance of resilience, commitment, and vision in South Africa’s classrooms.
