Child Marriages Still Haunt Our Communities

Child marriages, often hidden behind the traditional practice of ukuthwala, continue to haunt certain communities in the Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal. While defenders sometimes argue that it is part of cultural heritage, the reality is that today it frequently results in the forced union of young girls under the age of 18 — a practice that is both unlawful and devastating to those affected.

The impact reaches far beyond the individual child. Girls are pulled out of school, stripping them of the opportunity to learn, grow and achieve independence. Once married off, many are burdened with early pregnancies, exposing them to serious health complications and increasing the likelihood of maternal and infant mortality. Emotionally, these girls often live with fear, trauma and feelings of powerlessness, leaving invisible wounds that linger well into adulthood.

Communities, too, carry the weight of these practices. When children are denied education and autonomy, cycles of poverty and inequality are reinforced. Families lose daughters who could have become doctors, teachers, entrepreneurs or leaders, instead seeing them trapped in circumstances that rob them of their potential. This undermines development and weakens the social fabric that should hold communities together.

Ending child marriage is not only a legal necessity but also a moral responsibility. Protecting children starts at home, within families, and extends to neighbours, schools, faith groups and traditional leaders. Speaking out, raising awareness, and challenging harmful traditions can create safer environments where every child has the freedom to dream and to pursue a better future.

A strong and united stance against child marriage ensures healthier, more resilient communities — and a brighter tomorrow for South Africa’s children.
