Premier Ndlovu Promises Better Use of Public Funds

Mpumalanga Premier Mandla Ndlovu says government is determined to improve the way public money is managed to ensure that residents get the services they deserve.

The Premier, together with Members of the Executive Council (MECs), met with representatives of the Auditor-General of South Africa (AGSA) in Mbombela this week to discuss the province’s 2024/25 audit outcomes.

While some departments and public entities improved and achieved clean audits, others showed no progress compared to the previous year. Clean audits are important because they demonstrate that money is being used properly and in line with financial laws.

The Auditor-General’s office pointed out that improvements were due to stricter controls, better compliance with legislation and the adoption of recommendations given in previous audits.

Premier Ndlovu acknowledged that challenges remain but stressed that steps are being taken to fix the problems.

“Our departments are in the process of filling critical vacancies to improve capacity, and the appointment of personnel will be on merit to achieve audit improvement,” he said.

He added that the provincial government will act firmly against issues such as unauthorised, irregular, fruitless and wasteful expenditure.

For communities, these audit outcomes are more than just numbers. They reflect whether funds are being directed towards essential services such as roads, clinics, schools and housing. The Premier’s assurance comes as many residents continue to call for improved service delivery across the province.
