The Mpumalanga Provincial Government has reaffirmed its commitment to safe and reliable transport as Transport Month officially kicked off in Grootvlei, Dipaleseng Local Municipality.
MEC Thulasizwe Thomo of Public Works, Roads and Transport led the launch of the 2025 Transport Month, which was conducted through an Inter-Provincial Law Enforcement Operation along the N3 Corridor. The impactful operation, held in collaboration with the N3 Forum, involved law enforcement stakeholders from Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal and the Free State. This joint effort highlighted a shared commitment to strengthening road safety, ensuring compliance, and enhancing cross-border law enforcement on one of South Africa’s busiest national routes.
In his address during the parade, MEC Thomo emphasised the importance of public transport in the daily lives of thousands of commuters, as well as its role in economic growth and social development. “The launch is part of the broader Transport Month Programme, which aims to raise awareness about road safety, promote responsible driving behaviour, and highlight the Department’s ongoing efforts to maintain and improve transport infrastructure across the province,” he said.
The Provincial Government further noted that around 70,000 learners in the province depend on public transport to get to school and back as part of a social intervention programme aimed at improving access to education.
Throughout October, the Departments of Public Works, Roads and Transport, together with Community Safety, Security and Liaison, will intensify law enforcement operations to ensure compliance with road safety regulations. Awareness campaigns will also be conducted to encourage responsible driving and reduce accidents on the province’s roads.
Additionally, the Provincial Government has committed to strengthening transport infrastructure through ongoing maintenance of bridges, culverts and road networks, intending to create a safer, more reliable, and efficient transport system for all.
