The long-awaited Driekoppies Water Treatment Plant in Nkomazi, Mpumalanga, is nearing completion and is expected to bring much-needed relief to thousands of residents facing persistent water shortages.
The multi-million-rand project, funded by the Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS), aims to provide clean and reliable water to approximately 14 villages surrounding Driekoppies, benefiting nearly 190,000 people.
Deputy Minister of Water and Sanitation, Mr David Mahlobo, together with Cooperative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs MEC, Mr Speed Mashilo, Ehlanzeni District Executive Mayor, Cllr Terra Shabangu, and Nkomazi Local Municipality Executive Mayor, Cllr Phindile Magagula, recently conducted an oversight visit to the site to assess progress and ensure operational readiness.
During the visit, residents expressed mixed feelings about the delays. “There are water tankers, but most people in the area are old and cannot fetch water from them,” said Ms Thandi Mahlalela (52), a mother of four. “Sometimes the water is not enough for everyone. We hope this visit will bring change and speed up completion.”
Deputy Minister Mahlobo acknowledged that the project had experienced setbacks but assured residents that government is determined to fast-track its completion. “We are committed to ensuring that every household has access to safe drinking water. A dedicated task team will monitor progress and provide monthly reports,” he said.
MEC Mashilo praised the collaborative efforts between departments and municipalities to address the water challenges in Nkomazi. “The upgraded water treatment scheme will significantly improve supply to nearby villages. We are committed to providing equitable and quality water and sanitation for all,” he affirmed.
He also urged community members to play their part by reporting acts of vandalism and theft of infrastructure, which have previously contributed to delays in similar projects.
The Driekoppies Water Treatment Plant forms part of ongoing government efforts to strengthen water and sanitation infrastructure across Mpumalanga and ensure sustainable service delivery for communities in need.
