Matlanatso Lydia Moroane was sworn in by the Bushbuckridge local municipality as its new executive mayor on July 16, 2024. Prior to that, she served as an interim mayor.  Sylvia Nxumalo, the mayor of the Bushbuckridge local municipality for a long tenure, left the council and was sworn in as an ANC member of the National Council of Provinces.

Moroane -Zitha’s appointment has signals a new chapter in the history of the Bushbuckridge. The new Mayor promised to make sure that every child receives the high-quality education they deserve because “…a good education is the tool of elevating the future of the region.” During her maiden first speech to the council house or public representative in the local municipality who attended, she touched on delicate topics that still have a lasting impact. First of all, she didn’t just address the community at large; she spoke to the representative of communities of the heart. She highlighted issues affecting children, particularly those who attend school without proper uniforms and supplies.

And added regarding gender-based violence, saying that the cabinet and she will take on it critically. Furthermore, the communities’ demand on water plans is that they work harder to ensure that every family has access to clean water and plans to do this by working with local groups to develop new ways to ensure there is enough water in bushbuckridge, such as drilling more boreholes and promised infrastructure development.

The executive mayor encouraged all public representatives to continue their good job and indicated her desire to work closely with them to lift bushbuckridge to a rural metropolis, and believe that her goal could be achieved if public representatives and communities together, involving public representative, youth, people with disability, traditional leaders, and pastors from different religious backgrounds and promised business development, job creation and also promised not to put the ANC into shame
