A ranger was arrested in connection to a rifle that went missing a few weeks ago in Skukuza, Kruger National Park. The arrest took place on Wednesday, July 31, 2024, after a focused joint operation by the Mpumalanga Tactical Response Team (TRT) and specialists in Cash-in-Transit (CIT) crimes from the Ehlanzeni District, along with Crime Intelligence from SANPARKS.
The operation was based on intelligence gathered by SANPARKS, leading to the identification and arrest of the 37-year-old ranger. The subsequent search resulted in the discovery of the rifle and approximately 18 rounds of ammunition hidden in a ceiling in Hluvukani near Thulamahashe, in the Bushbuckridge area.
The ranger is currently detained and faces charges related to the illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition. Further investigation may lead to additional charges as the probe continues, with theft being a potential allegation. As part of the investigative process, the firearm will undergo ballistic testing to ascertain whether it has been used in the commission of other crimes.
The Acting Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga, Major General (Dr) Zeph Mkhwanazi, emphasized the severity with which the SAPS treats incidents of missing firearms. He expressed his appreciation for the effective cooperation between SANPARKS and the police teams that led to the arrest, reinforcing the commitment of the SAPS to ensure public safety and uphold security measures within the national park. The suspect is expected to appear in court soon.
