The Department of Women, Youth, and Persons with Disabilities has called on communities across South Africa to report cases of abuse against women, youth, and people with disabilities to the nearest police station. The appeal comes in the wake of a troubling increase in reported rape and murder cases.
Recent crime statistics reveal that between April and June this year, a staggering 9,309 rape cases and 6,198 murder cases were recorded. The surge in violent crimes has raised alarm, especially regarding the growing incidences of rape and murder involving young girls and children.
Cassius Selala, a spokesperson for the department, expressed concern over recent cases, including the weekend discovery of two murdered girls—aged 16 in Madikana village, Limpopo, and 19 in Hammanskraal, Tshwane. “These statistics call upon society to be on high alert over the growing incidences of rape and murder of young girls and children in South Africa,” Selala said.
The department emphasized that women’s rights are fundamental human rights, which encompass the right to be free from violence and discrimination. South Africa has established several legal and constitutional measures aimed at combating crime, including advocacy for women’s rights and gender equality.
Selala urged communities, NGOs, faith-based organizations, and community policing forums to collaborate in protecting and defending the rights of all citizens, particularly women and children. “We must join hands to ensure a safer society,” he added.
The department’s plea is part of broader efforts to create awareness and address the growing threat of gender-based violence in the country.
