UNICEF is calling on the government to ban the sale of ultra-processed and junk foods in schools. The organisation warns that products such as sugary drinks, crisps and fast food are contributing to childhood obesity, diabetes and other preventable illnesses.

In South Africa, the National School Nutrition Programme provides millions of learners with daily meals, especially in rural areas. These meals, which often include maize, beans and vegetables, are vital in ensuring children have access to balanced nutrition.

Despite these efforts, tuck shops and vendors continue to sell sweets, fried snacks and fizzy drinks within school premises. Health advocates argue that these products undermine government nutrition initiatives and harm children’s wellbeing.

There are growing calls for schools to prioritise fresh fruit, bottled water and home-made snacks as healthier and more affordable alternatives. By reshaping food choices in schools, South Africa could promote healthier lifestyles, improve focus in classrooms and support long-term child development.

UNICEF says that decisive government action is essential to protect the health of future generations.
