What began as a domestic dispute in Calcutta has ended in tragedy, leaving two people dead.
A police officer based at Hazyview Police Station shot and killed his girlfriend before turning the gun on himself in Alexandria Trust, Calcutta, on Monday, 23 September.
According to Mpumalanga police spokesperson, Brigadier Selvy Maphanga, the officer has been identified as 40-year-old Foster Matsane. He was reportedly involved in an argument with his partner, 35-year-old Thandeka Phenduka, shortly before the shooting.
The South African Police Service (SAPS) received reports of the unfolding incident and dispatched members to the address. However, upon their arrival, two gunshots were heard from inside the house.
When officers entered, they discovered both Matsane and Phenduka with fatal gunshot wounds. Paramedics were called to the scene and declared the couple dead.
Brigadier Maphanga confirmed that Calcutta Police have opened a murder case and also registered an inquest docket.
This tragic case has shocked the community, raising renewed concerns about domestic violence and the misuse of service firearms.
