The Mpumalanga Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison has expressed shock following the tragic death of a traffic law enforcement officer on the N4 toll road near Middelburg.
Joseph Mtselu, 49, a Principal Provincial Inspector attached to Overload Control in Middelburg, was directing an LDV pulling a trailer to the Middelburg Weighbridge in the early hours of 14 October 2025 when he was struck by the vehicle. The driver reportedly failed to stop and allegedly fled the scene on foot.
Mr Mtselu tragically died at the scene. Police have opened a case of culpable homicide and are actively searching for the suspect. An investigation is ongoing.
Mpumalanga MEC for Community Safety, Security and Liaison, Mr Jackie Macie, extended his heartfelt condolences to Mr Mtselu’s family, friends and colleagues. “It is devastating for the Department to lose traffic officers while they are working tirelessly to save lives on our roads,” he said.

MEC Macie urged police to pursue the driver with urgency and called on traffic law enforcement officers to remain vigilant, noting that some motorists continue to disregard road rules.
The Department and community mourn the loss of a dedicated officer whose life was taken in the line of duty
