Hazyview residents will come together this Saturday for a heartfelt cause as Hazyview Primary, Panda Preschool and Hazy Runners host a Fun Run/Walk for Bongeka at the Hazyview Primary School grounds. The event, taking place on 29 November 2025 from 08:00 to 13:00, aims to raise funds and awareness for nine-year-old Bongeka, a courageous young girl battling a life-threatening congenital condition.

Bongeka has lived with liver cirrhosis since birth, enduring numerous surgeries and hospital stays. In 2021, specialists at Wits Donald Gordon Hospital assessed her for a liver transplant, but severe lung complications made the procedure too dangerous. Despite receiving a terminal prognosis, she continues to defy expectations with extraordinary resilience and the unwavering support of her family and community.

In recent months, her condition has worsened. She suffered severe internal bleeding and now requires frequent surgical interventions to repair her veins. Bongeka also depends on a daily oxygen concentrator, as her oxygen levels often fall below 60%, making continuous oxygen therapy essential for her survival.

Saturday’s event is designed not only to bring the community together but also to provide much-needed financial support for her ongoing medical care, surgical procedures and home-based oxygen therapy. Organisers have encouraged participants, well-wishers and potential sponsors to attend and contribute towards easing the family’s growing medical expenses.

The organisers say the Fun Run/Walk represents more than just a fitness activity—it symbolises hope in every step taken for Bongeka’s future.

Willing sponsors and supporters are welcome to join on the day.
