Frustrated residents of Mkhuhlu in Bushbuckridge have called for the immediate suspension of the Calcutta Police Station commander, accusing senior officers of failing to tackle violent crime and allegedly working with criminals.

The community says at least 37 people have been murdered in the area since the beginning of the year, including four people who were shot dead last week. Residents handed a memorandum to Mpumalanga police management, demanding the removal of the station commander and other identified officers pending an investigation.

Mkhuhlu Crisis Committee chairperson Wonder Mhlongo claimed that criminal cases are being closed without explanation. Mpumalanga police spokesperson Brigadier Mavela Masondo said the concerns would be addressed, adding that investigations are ongoing, no arrests have been made, and police visibility has been increased while detectives and crime intelligence continue their work.
