FIFA’s report on anti-doping efforts from its 2023 tournaments has revealed that no
doping cases were prosecuted. The report covers major events like the Women’s World
Cup, Under-20 World Cup, and Club World Cup, with over 2,600 samples collected
across these competitions.
“In 2023, the anti-doping programme mainly focused on the Women’s World Cup, which
saw an unprecedented increase in the number of tests carried out per team, with 860 in-
and out-of-competition tests conducted,” the FIFA report stated.
While one sample at the Women’s World Cup co-hosted by Australia and New Zealand
resulted in an adverse analytical finding, it was “justified by a valid therapeutic use
exemption,” according to the report.
At the men’s U-20 World Cup in Argentina, a sample brought up an atypical finding for
testosterone. However, follow-up tests and analysis did not confirm the finding, FIFA’s
report added.
The absence of any prosecuted doping cases from FIFA’s
major tournaments in 2023 is a positive sign for the integrity
of these events. The report highlights FIFA’s commitment to
rigorous anti-doping efforts and maintaining a level playing
field for athletes across its competitions.
