Health official nabbed with drugs suspended

The Mpumalanga Department of Health has suspended an official after he was arrested
in possession of hospital equipment and illegal drugs.

Sifiso Cyril Galiya, who works for the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) at Embhuleni
Hospital, was arrested by police during a road operation on February 23 while driving
his vehicle. He was found to have hospital equipment and drugs with an estimated
street value of over R14,000, despite being officially on leave.

Galiya was wearing his EMS uniform at the time of the arrest, an act which warrants
misconduct charges. He appeared in court the same day and was released on bail,
facing charges of drug possession and illegal possession of state property.

The health department has now suspended Galiya pending the outcome of the court
case. He also faces an internal disciplinary hearing on charges of misconduct, theft and
unlawful possession of medical supplies intended for paramedics responding to
emergencies.

“The department takes a stern view of any criminal activity by officials,” said a
spokesperson. “We are seriously against drugs and substance abuse.” The department
promised to cooperate fully with the police investigation so that the law can take its
course.

The arrest highlights the need for vigilance against abuse of resources intended for
critical public healthcare services. The department has sent a strong message that such
behaviour will not be tolerated.
