Mapulaneng News (mapulaneng.com) — last updated 15 September 2026
This policy explains what personal information Mapulaneng News collects from visitors to mapulaneng.com, why we collect it, and the rights you have over it under South Africa's Protection of Personal Information Act, 2013 (POPIA).
Who this policy covers
Mapulaneng News is published by Langa Media CC, registration number [registration number], of Unit no. 1 Kwamahle, 175 Woodpecker's limb, Vakansiedorp, Hazyview 1242 ("we", "us"). We are the responsible party for the personal information described below.
Journalism and editorial content
Mapulaneng News is a news publication. As part of our journalistic activities, we may collect, research and publish information relating to individuals, organisations, public officials, businesses and events where this is necessary for legitimate journalistic and editorial purposes — including information from published reports, photographs, public statements, court proceedings, official documents and other legitimate news sources. Our commitment to privacy is balanced with freedom of expression, freedom of the media and the public interest, and published journalistic content may remain part of our permanent news archive.
Information we collect
We collect personal information directly from you in the following ways:
- Newsletter sign-up. If you enter your email address to subscribe to Mapulaneng News updates, we store that address against your subscription so we can send you news updates. We ask you to tick a consent box before subscribing, and we record the date and time you gave that consent. Every newsletter we send carries a one-click unsubscribe link, and you can also unsubscribe by contacting us using the details below — we act on either immediately.
- Site usage. Like most websites, our hosting and content-delivery providers automatically log standard technical information — IP address, browser type, pages visited, and timestamps — for security and to keep the site running reliably. We do not currently use analytics or tracking cookies beyond this.
Cookies
We use one strictly-necessary cookie that remembers a site preview preference during development and has no effect on your visit to the live site. If we begin showing advertising through a network such as Google AdSense, that network may set its own cookies to personalize or measure ads — see "Advertising" below, which we will keep up to date if and when that starts.
Advertising
Mapulaneng News may display advertising served by third-party networks, including Google AdSense. These networks may use cookies or similar technology to show ads based on your visits to this and other websites. You can opt out of personalized advertising through Google's Ad Settings or via www.aboutads.info/choices.
Who we share information with
We use the following third parties to run Mapulaneng News, each of whom processes data on our behalf:
- Supabase (database and admin authentication)
- Cloudflare (image storage and content delivery)
- Vercel (website hosting)
- Google AdSense, where advertising is enabled (see above)
We do not sell your personal information to anyone.
How long we keep it
We keep newsletter subscriber addresses for as long as your subscription is active. Technical logs are retained for a limited period for security purposes and then discarded.
Security compromises
If we have reasonable grounds to believe your personal information has been accessed or acquired by an unauthorised person, we will notify the Information Regulator and you, as soon as reasonably possible after discovering the compromise, in accordance with section 22 of POPIA — including what happened, what we're doing about it, and what you can do to protect yourself.
Your rights under POPIA
You have the right to:
- Ask us what personal information we hold about you
- Ask us to correct or delete it
- Object to how we use it, or withdraw consent (e.g. unsubscribe from our newsletter)
- Lodge a complaint with the Information Regulator (South Africa) at enquiries@inforegulator.org.za if you believe we have handled your information unlawfully
Children
Mapulaneng News is not directed at children, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 18.
