Nursing Graduates Embark on Careers Rooted in Compassion

A graduation ceremony was held for 362 newly minted nurses from the class of 2023, with a powerful speech highlighting their vital role in healthcare.

“You have chosen a noble profession – one rooted in empathy, resilience and caring for those in need,” said Sasekani Manzini, MEC of health in her keynote address. “The world needs nurses now more than ever.”

The graduating class included 216 nurses with diplomas in nursing, 14 specialized in midwifery, 83 holding 4-year nursing diplomas, and 49 with R171 qualifications.

Manzini emphasized the critical role nurses play in light of challenges like the COVID-19 pandemic. “You witnessed the power of compassionate care and teamwork,” she noted.

She advised graduates to commit to lifelong learning as medicine advances. “Stay dedicated to professional growth and embracing new technologies,” Smith urged.

Manzini also spoke about the mental health impacts of a demanding profession. “Take care of yourself physically and emotionally,” she told the graduates.

The MEC inspired graduates to empower patients, saying, “You have the chance to heal hearts, minds and souls.” She also told soon-to-be nurses to remember Florence Nightingale’s words on overcoming adversity.

As graduates embark on their nursing journeys, the ceremony highlighted how even small acts of care can change lives. “Cherish the memories you’ve created,” Manzini said. “I congratulate you as you enter an incredibly rewarding career.”
