Proposed Hazyview Water Park Aims to Extend Tourists' Stays

Plans to develop a water park featuring an artificial wave facility in Hazyview are being explored as part of efforts to strengthen the area's tourism industry, attract more visitors and create economic opportunities for surrounding communities.

The Department of Economic Development and Tourism (DEDT) hosted a feasibility study workshop with various stakeholders at the Sabie River Sun Resort on October 22 to discuss the proposed development and assess its potential benefits.

The project was identified by Mpumalanga Premier Mandla Ndlovu as a catalytic initiative during his 2025 State of the Province Address, with the aim of stimulating infrastructure development, promoting economic growth and creating sustainable employment opportunities.

DEDT Tourism Director Johan Mdluli said the proposed development was intended to ensure that communities surrounding major tourism attractions also benefit from the province's growing tourism sector.

"Rural economies must be brought into the centre of growth, and communities surrounding our natural assets must become active participants in the prosperity those assets can unlock," said Mdluli.

Water park could encourage longer tourist stays

Mdluli explained that Hazyview, which serves as a gateway to the Kruger National Park and the Panorama Route, attracts both local and international tourists. However, many visitors use the town primarily as a stopover while travelling to other popular destinations.

The proposed water park and artificial wave facility aims to change this by introducing additional recreational activities that could encourage tourists to spend more time in the area.

The attraction would cater to families, young travellers and adventure seekers, potentially making Hazyview a destination in its own right rather than simply a transit point.

The development could also generate employment opportunities during both the construction and operational phases, with potential jobs in engineering, hospitality, lifeguarding, maintenance and administration.

Local businesses expected to benefit

Beyond employment creation, the proposed project could open doors for small businesses and entrepreneurs in communities surrounding Hazyview.

According to Mdluli, increased tourist numbers and longer stays could translate into greater spending at local accommodation establishments, restaurants, retail outlets and transport businesses.

"Local accommodation establishments, restaurants, retailers and transport operators could also benefit from increased visitor spending. Small businesses, local artisans and young people are expected to have opportunities to participate in the tourism value chain," he said.

He added that the feasibility study would further explore the project's potential to diversify tourism offerings while promoting inclusive economic development in Hazyview and neighbouring communities.

If the project proceeds, the proposed water park could add a new dimension to Mpumalanga's tourism offering, strengthen Hazyview's position as a major tourism destination and create opportunities for residents and local businesses to benefit from visitor spending.
